Mastering the Portuguese language and the ability to express oneself through reading and writing are key to the exercise of citizenship and ensure children, adolescents and young people the right to learn. Fundação Itaú Social contributes to further development of this ability with the Writing the Future program, carried out in partnership with Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas em Educação, Cultura e Ação Comunitária (Cenpec) and the Ministry of Education (MEC). The program aims to upgrade the skills of Portuguese language teachers from public schools all over Brazil by stimulating and recognizing teaching practices through the continuing education of teachers of junior high school and high school in the Brazilian public schools.

As a mobilization strategy, the "Writing the Future"- Portuguese Language Olympics is held in the even years. This is a competition of written texts for students of the 5th grade of junior high school to the 3rd year of high school in public schools. Teachers from all over the country are invited to participate. They have access to the Olimpíada de Língua Portuguesa Escrevendo o Futuro ["Writing the Future" - Portuguese Language Olympics] Collection, a support material that guides them through the workshops to be delivered in the classroom to all the students. At the end of the process, students will have written texts of these genres: poem, literary memoirs, Brazilian short stories known as crônica and reviews. They go through several selection stages and receive prizes.

Each edition of the "Writing the Future" - Portuguese Language Olympics runs for two years. During all the edition, teachers are offered a number of opportunities to develop their teaching practice, like face-to-face and distance courses, disseminate contents on the teaching of Portuguese language and participate in the Writing the Future Portal, where they interact with colleagues and experts and deepen their knowledge.
